Phthalic anhydride

Hscode: 29173500 Chemical formula: C₆H₄(CO)₂O CAS Nu: 85-44-9 UN Nu: 2214 Hazard Class: 8 Synonyms: Isobenzofuran-1,3-dione, Phthalic anhydride

Phthalic anhydride is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₆H₄(CO)₂O. It is an important industrial chemical that is primarily used in the production of phthalate esters, which are widely used as plasticizers in the manufacturing of plastics.

Phthalic anhydride itself is a white crystalline solid that sublimes at temperatures above its melting point. It is derived from the oxidation of o-xylene or naphthalene in a process known as the “Orth xylene process” or “naphthalene process.” The resulting phthalic anhydride is then purified for commercial use

  • 1. Plasticizers: The primary use of phthalic anhydride is in the production of phthalate esters, which are widely used as plasticizers. These plasticizers are added to polymers to increase their flexibility, durability, and processability. They are commonly used in the manufacturing of PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) products such as cables, wires, flooring, and synthetic leather.

  • 2. Resins and Coatings: Phthalic anhydride is a key component in the production of phthalate based resins, such as alkyd resins. These resins are used in coatings, adhesives, and sealants, providing properties like good adhesion, durability, and chemical resistance.

  • 3. Dyes and Pigments: Phthalic anhydride is a precursor for the synthesis of various dyes and pigments. It is utilized in the production of phthalein dyes, which are commonly used in textile and leather industries. Additionally, it serves as a building block in the production of pigments used in printing inks, paints, and plastics.

  • 4. Pharmaceutical and Agrochemical Industry: Phthalic anhydride is employed as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. It is used in the production of certain drugs, such as phthalylsulfathiazole, which is an antibiotic. It is also utilized in the manufacture of herbicides and insecticides.

  • 5. Other Applications: Phthalic anhydride finds use in the production of flame retardants, lubricant additives, and polyester resins. It is also employed as a curing agent for epoxy resins, which are widely used in coatings, adhesives, and electronics.

The packaging of this products is carried out using a modern and precise production line, which includes equipment such as bagging, palletizing, shrinking, and big bag systems. Phthalic anhydride is packed in 25-kilogram bags. These bags are initially prepared from three-layered tubular LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) film with a thickness ranging from 0.14 to 0.16 millimeters, or special combinations of other types of polyethylene that meet specific requirements such as suitable tensile strength, weldability, printability, and anti-static properties. The bags are prepared and delivered to the factory. In the bagging machine, they are filled with Phthalic Anhydride powder to achieve a weight of 25 kilograms per bag. During the production of the three-layered film, desired information such as the company’s logo, products weight, and storage conditions are printed on the bags. In the palletizing process, 50 bags are placed on a wooden pallet, and then in the shrinking process, the entire package is completely covered with plastic and prepared for loading.
